We can see this subjection to suit
outdated standards in America today with police brutality and the new laws
surrounding Abortion. Those with the outdated and discriminatory ethics are rightfully
being ridiculed and having their offensive and controlling views dismissed for
the most part, but there are still no positive outcomes, the prejudiced
organisations still remain triumphant despite regular and powerful backlash.
There’s a superior notion that is clearly trying to hold onto traditional
beliefs and using that to uphold their ideal society. Yet we are more than
aware of the opposed motions that are more popular and ‘correct’. But here, we return
back to the idea of ‘the terms realism
and realist inhabit[ing] both the realm of everyday usage’ (Morris, 2003). What
defines ‘everyday usage’? People are raised and then also live under very
different circumstances, so the ‘everyday’ can wildly vary from person to
person. It’s impossible to certainly distinguish what connotations a piece may
have in terms of the reality that it somehow portrays and the resultant denotations
(Saussure, 1916). Similarly, with representation, what may be accurate to some
may be counterfactual to others. Representation in particular can be influenced
by social presumptions and there is no guarantee as to what the founding
principle of those beliefs are. The most harmful may stem from racist, sexist
and related judgements and in their own reality, having a racial hierarchy is
their normal, they believe in designated groups that are highlighted by the
various gangs in Sons of Anarchy and working with them is inconceivable. The
inconceivable however, is a type of realism, the basic understanding of the action
lacking a viable possibility focuses on one version of many potential realities.
They may also support a patriarchal society that heavily relies on treating
women the way that Wendy Case had been treated. The ruthlessness of the attack
on Gemma Teller, including her gang rape is seen as something that should be
commonplace.
A subdued account of these events makes for an easier viewing and perhaps is only used to make the viewer feel a level of discomfort that still allows them to focus on the events that follow, without being overwhelmed by them. Which in turn means that the rest of the viewing isn’t controlled by the previous events. The mixture of both positive, negative, common and uncommon representations creates a vagueness in what the narrative of Sons of Anarchy is trying to show, the connotations fluctuate just from what is shown within the text itself. To add to the perplexity of the suggestions, the ambiguity allows the definitions that are implied to adapt to changing principles, whether that be an individual changing their behaviours and realising the prejudice or new laws influencing the morality of people who believe whatever they are told. Due to this, it actually doesn’t matter how views change throughout time as Sons of Anarchy doesn’t solidify any notions, the ideas of right and wrong are melded together so that each incident creates numerous representations that are not necessarily incorrect.
