Introduction

More modern ideologies surround themselves around the appearance and/or the lack of representation in media. Ramesh, Khatri and Samuel Proposed that ‘understanding the semantics, or the meaning, of representations involves… ascension from concrete (and abstract) concepts denoting a number of observations.’ (2018) Essentially it is the way we perceive a meaning from something that is either implied or inferred, traditionally within a text. This can easily be linked to realism in the sense that ‘the terms realism and realist inhabit both the realm of everyday usage’ suggested by Morris.(2003) In order to be able to show the 'everyday' we need to be able to denote common and identifiable themes that have been presented within a text to then be able to attach ourselves to a new sense of reality, that then proceeds to allow the audience to make personal connections to the subjects within a piece. Sons of Anarchy (2008), is an American television series that depicts the life of the protagonist Jax Teller and follows his tested loyalty to his lawless motorcycle gang.

This show has stood the test of time and continues to grow its audience because the creators' use of realism and the accurate and challenged representations allows the show to appeal to an audience and also adapt to changing principles.
